 NEC access station "AtermWG1800HP" is a wireless LAN router that conforms to the IEEE802.11ac (Draft, hereinafter referred to as 11ac) standard. 11ac is still in a state where the extension is not yet available, and AtermWG1800HP can also be an extension product, so we tried to test it with two sets of packaging. As the first batch of 11ac products with a standard value above 1Gbps, I would like to take a detailed look at it in this report.

 AtermWG1800HP (hereinafter referred to as WG1800HP) is the first wireless LAN router product supported by 11ac for NEC to access Stekenica. The corresponding frequency bands are 2.4GHz and 5 GHz, and the standards correspond to 11b/g/n and 11a/n/ac respectively. Each band has three built-in antennas and three antennas for reception. It can be used not only as a wireless LAN master unit, but also as a wireless LAN slave unit (Ethernet converter) and a repeater for extending communication distance and avoiding obstacles. The three modes are switched by a switch on the back of the main body.

 The size is 33 × 111x170 mm (width × depth × height) and the weight is about 0.4 kg. By replacing the bracket, it can be placed not only vertically but also horizontally, and the wall mount can also be installed by fixing it with two screws. The power consumption is 17W. With regard to design, this is a unique shape with a strong personality compared with previous wireless LAN products for NEC access systems and compelling mobile router products with cutting-edge designs.

 The management screen of WG1800HP is a familiar design for people who have previously used NEC to access Stekenica's router products. Some applications are used for Android and iOS, which are used to set up wireless LAN connections. In addition, try to open the management screen on iPhone5, the design will not be confused, and the features can be used without problems.

 CrystalDiskMark 3.0.2e, jperf2.0.0 (iperf1.7.0) and vsftpd were used to determine the speed. The measurement environment includes Windows 8 Pro notebooks (Core i5 8 GB memory, SSD) and desktops (Core i3 8 GB memory, SSD).

 With regard to the connection form, the desktop is always connected to the WG1800HP with the wired LAN of 1Gbps, in the determination of 11n, the notebook is connected with the wireless LAN, and in the determination of 11ac, the notebook is connected to the WG1800HP of the converter mode with the wired LAN of 1Gbps. The measurement site is a room in the apartment. The 2.4 GHz band is used by a number of neighboring companies, but there is no use of the 5 GHz band at all. The operating system only switches the desktop side to Ubuntu12.10 during FTP measurement.

 In the determination of using CrystalDiskMark, the shared folder of the RAMDISK made on the desktop PC was used as the folder installed as the network drive on the laptop side. The result is about 152 Mbps read and 132 Mbps written at 11n 300 Mbps connection (double speed mode, using the "Intel Centrino Wireless-N2230" on the laptop). In addition, in the case of a 450 Mbps connection at 11n (double speed mode, used by the logic technology "LAN-W450U/N" of the USB2.0 wireless LAN extension), about 100 Mbps is read and about 145 Mbps is written.

 As the highlight of 11ac's 1300 Mbps connection, in measurements using CrystalDiskMark, about 311 Mbps was read and about 284 Mbps was written. In measurements using FTP, about 330 Mbps was read and about 351 Mbps was written. However, in order to prevent storage from becoming a bottleneck this time, the intra-LAN transfer of files using SSD and HDD may be a little later than it is because it is the result of using RAMDISK.

 The measurement result of 11ac by Jperf is about 334 ~ 516 Mbps. The wired LAN of 1Gbps is about 670 to 687 Mbps, and the speed difference is also stable within 20 Mbps. There still seems to be a gap, but the difference between the maximum speed of 11ac and the lowest speed of 1Gbps wired LAN is about 154Mbps, which is significantly faster than before 11n, where there is a difference of several hundred Mbps.

 WG1800HP can use storage connected to a USB2.0 port as a NAS. The corresponding format is FAT format, or you can use WG1800HP format. By using the media server function, the saved files can be played not only through PC in LAN, but also through devices and software corresponding to DLNA, such as TV, game consoles, smartphones, tablets and so on.

 With regard to speed, the USB3.0 corresponding memory is used to measure, and the 11ac reads about 53 Mbps and writes about 57 Mbps. Compared with the models only equipped with 11n double speed mode, it is more than 10 Mbps faster, but considering that the speed of the 1Gbps wired LAN connection does not change much, it can also be considered to be due to the improved storage performance used in the measurement.

 By the way, with regard to NAS functionality, more detailed PDF format is available on the official website than the manual for packaging bundled paper (download-manual-WG1800HP click "instructions (features)" in the open list). In the manual here, there are also detailed instructions on how to use the "Web access function" to store USB storage online.

 With regard to 11ac as a major play, from the benchmark results, although there is no number like the standard value, it can be said that the earliest 1Gbps wired LAN will not produce several times the speed difference, as long as it is not in the LAN when transferring a large number of files from PC to PC, it will not feel the speed difference with the cable.

 Although the NAS feature is less conspicuous, the variety of machines used in addition to PC, such as smartphones and tablets, has also increased, continuing to serve as a refuge for data overflowing from storage, or as a storage location for watching from DLNA's corresponding TVs and tape recorders.

 With regard to design, there are also many reminiscences of stealth fighters and unconfirmed designs in general-oriented models across from business products and the sea. In Japan, there are many elegant designs that impress boxes, but I think it's good to take risks with designs like WG1800HP. So what?
