A psychiatrist who has seen a person with hikikomori for many years warns that "a dangerous sign" and "decrease in desire" of "a person who is comfortable with remote work" are in progress.

* This article is a re-edited version of Tamaki Saito and Masaru Sato, "Why is it hard to meet people? 38 tips that don't wear down your mentality" (Chuko Shinsho Lacre).

"Desire" and "relationship" cannot be satisfied without meeting

[Sato] Remote is convenient, but sometimes I feel that something is different from what I actually meet. I feel that such a moody part has become much clearer.

[Saito] Let's break into the mystery a little more. I think that there are two things that people cannot be satisfied without actually meeting. "Desire" and "relationship". It can be said that it is in these two points that the significance of meeting human beings is maximized.

[Sato] I see. Could you explain each one?

[Saito] First, I would like to talk about the latter "relationship" from a concrete example. Education is one of the strongest aspects that cannot be started without meeting. Very unfortunately, college students today can only see the professor's face remotely and have no horizontal connection. I feel that the loss of education due to being separated from meeting is immeasurable.

[Sato] I have also given remote lectures at the university since Corona, but I didn't feel that it was inconvenient compared to face-to-face. Rather, I got the response that I was able to proceed with the lessons with a sense of speed compared to before.

However, there was a condition for that, and there was no "at first glance customer". We have already held face-to-face lessons for several years, which confirms the individuality of students through their presentness, and we have a relationship of mutual trust. That's why you can understand what you're thinking even through the Zoom screen. Is it a feeling that you can supplement the information obtained remotely with your imagination?

The medical training field is uncertain.

[Saito] I understand.

[Sato] However, the fact that new students suddenly zoom in should be quite difficult for both those who teach and those who take classes.

[Saito] That's right. However, unfortunately, there are many cases where this is the case. Of course, there are some parts that can be complemented remotely, but practical training and experiments are absolutely impossible. It may be said that it is natural, but when thinking about "the meaning of meeting people", I think that there is an unexpected hint.

Taking medicine as an example, the existence of the training site is full of accidents and uncertainties. It contains a lot of knowledge that should be experienced and absorbed on the spot, which does not go according to the textbook. If you take the time to think deeply, it often happens that even if something that matches the description in the textbook happens, the event in front of you does not seem to be the case at all. It is necessary for students to learn the range of such uncertainties through practical training, so if you become a doctor only in classroom lectures or without clinical training, you and the patient will be scared (laughs). ).
